Question on Savage Species

If I made a Celestial Deva Player character I can still choose levels of a class to add to it if say i chose x number of character levels of Deva?

I assume this is right its just reading how it says "multiclassing requires epic level use." This statement just means if you played a full deva right?

I can still make a Astral Deva 7/Fighter 4 or something for instance right? Just making sure theres not some requirement to keep adding levels of that because its overly powerful or some such.

I usually use my own way to make monsters when I DM so I was just making sure I do this correctly while being a player. Wouldn't want to have missed something and waste a lot of time.

Technically you must finish all of your racial levels before taking any other classes. However your Dm may decide differently.

In (mechanical) theory, there isn't an unbalancing aspect to it. Talk to your DM, it might be allowed. However, strictly by the book as LGodamus said, you have to finish your racial levels first.

Actually, there is. The "no multiclassing until you're done" rule is in there so you can't just pick & choose the abilities you want from the monster class and then multiclass out ... you have to finish the whole monster class. This is because some monster class levels are particularly good compared to PH classes, and being able to stop on one of the good levels (like +2 Str, +2 Con) and never bother with the next (weak) level and just lake levels in fighter or whatever, that's a problem.

The house rule that I use is, that you must level up in your "racial class" at least every other level. In other words, your can't take a PC class level (of any type) twice in a row, until you have compleated your racial progression.

You could have started as a human fighter and be in the midst of a ritual of change. Of course, that will lower your starting gear and you'll be paying money each time you level.
