Question Regarding Cohorts (& Leadership)

Actually, one thing that is neat about cohorts is that a cohort can make an interesting successor.

PC has a cohort, PC dies, player takes cohort as next character.

Though given the specialization of cohorts, maybe that's not going to work in a lot of cases.

That is how I see Leadership being used IMC... if any of my players had taken it that is.

The Leadership feat is renamed Mentor. You have a Paladin who takes it, you get a lower level Paladin, or religious fighter who wants to learn from you... wants to be like you.

It's not a 'fill the gaps in the party' feat.

YMMV

Darmanicus: in 3.5, by the rules as written, the Cohort's XP just appear out of nowhere. NOONE gets less XP, period.

The Cohort gets XP equal to [(CL / PL) x PX], where CL is Cohort Level, PL is PC Level, and PX is PC Experience Award.

For example, a level 10 PC with a level 8 Cohort gets 1,000XP; the Cohort gets (8/10x1000) = 800XP.

Cheers Pax, woulda replied earlier but I only get to use the works PC during me lunch!

I'd like to also add a few DMG points to clear up a few things about the Leadership feat and Cohorts:

"They are hired or seek out a PC or PCs, and they work out a deal agreeable to both parties so that the NPC works for the characters."

Cohorts are either hired or seek the PCs out (i.e. where the PCs may be found, such as a city of base of Op, not in the middle of the wilderness).

"It takes time to recruit replacements."

There is also a penalty if the employing PC was the reason the cohort got killed.

"Unlike other feats, this one depends heavily on the social settting of the campaign, the actual location of the PC, and the group dynamics. You're free to disallow this feat if it would disruptthe campaign."

"The DM determines the details of the cohort."

So no creating that cohort yourself, those sort of details are left to the DM. Afterall, a cohort is still an NPC. A PC with the leadership feat either has a cohort seek them out or themselves seek to hire a particular cohort. The DM after speaking with the player about what sort of cohort is being sought, takes a look at the PC's current locale, takes into account the campaign setting and any social/cultural conditions that may influence the type of cohorts available in the area and then provides an appropriate cohort for the PC.
