Question Regarding Nightwing's Transformation Ability

Atavar

First Post
Hello,

On p. 141 of the Monster Manual the nightwing's damage is described as "Bite 2d6+13 and transformation." However, in the nightwing's description on page 142 there is no mention of what this transformation actually does.

I just downloaded and looked at the latest errata and FAQ for the Monster Manual, and they don't describe this ability either.

So, what exactly does the nightwing's transformation power do?

Thanks,

Atavar

Actually, the nightwing first appeared in an od&d module, where its transformation ability was pivotal to the plot, so yes it does have one. Basically it polymorphs you into a dire bat. There have been threads on this before... try this thread here and see what we came up with.

Just thought I'd correct this here since people are being pointed to the other old thread.

The save is DC 22 from 10 + 1/2 HD + Cha modifier. If you think it ought to be more like poison in origin, it would be DC 18 (since the Con modifier is +0).

If you would use an undead creatures Con modifier for an ability you would actually use the creatures Cha modifier instead as a substitute since undead have no Con score.

Actually, the Nightcrawler uses its non-existant Con mod to adjust the DC against its poison. Nightcrawler poison is DC 22 (10 + 12 from having 25 HD); it's be DC 26 if the Cha mod was employed.

The Nightwing's transformation should probably be based on Cha though, since the ability is thoroughly supernatural in nature.
