D&D 4E Quick 4e Essentials Question...

Does anyone know what the minimum age requirement on the 4e Essentials box? Does it have a "For Ages X and up" on the box?

My youngest nephew's birthday is coming up next week and he has shown a strong interest in roleplaying and I'm thinking about picking it up for him at the FLGS this week.

Not a fan of 4e myself, but I'm sure it's a quality product that he would get a lot out of if it's okay for 8 year olds, so I'm willing to invest in his gaming future.

Edit: I don't do Target when a FLGS will do.

Keep in mind that the 12+ is a suggestion. Is he reading books like Harry Potter yet? He would probably enjoy the red box. He might not get every rules nuance, but he can still have fun with it. (This is the experience I had when I got my first red box).

My sons started much earlier than that, with much harder rules. My youngest first played when he was 7 or so, probably. I'd guess any kid that age or older that was a decent reader could play with the starter set.

I just pre-ordered my son the Essentials Dungeon Masters Kit and he's only 9 - although he's been playing 4e for nearly a year and is pretty bright. I think the Redbox would be ideal if he is brand new to D&D. I think 12+ is really not written in stone (In fact, I'm fairly certain it's simply printed on cardboard).

If your kid digs the Lord of the Rings trilogy or is reading Harry Potter, etc, I think it'll be alright. They might have to grow into it a little, but that'll allow for fun over time.

The D&D Basic Set I started with 30 years ago said "Ages 10 and up," ad that is how old I was when I started. 4e Essentials may be more complex than my old Basic Set, but at the same time look at what they expect kids to be doing in school compared to kids 30 years ago.

The main thing I would say with giving it to an 8 year-old would be whether the idea is to play with the child, or to let them play on their own with their own friends. As a player with you, I think 8 is fine. For a group of 8 year-olds on their own where one of them has to DM, 8 might be a bit young.
