Quick Gelatinous Cube question

My one gelatinous cube triumph was back in 1e, and it was a bit of a trap really. The whole dungeon level was corridors about 5ft wide and 8ft high, with the odd 10ft square room. The gelatinous cube was actually an alchemeticaly engineered napalm cube. The adventurers spotted it and, as was their wont, tossed oil at it and a lit torch.

Remember how in 1e fireballs could expand to fill their full 33,000+ cubic feet of volume?

Cleared most of the level...

So I used it on my party today.
Pit in front of them. One of them just says "I'll use my wall walkers to cross it"
The rest of the party hears a splort sound as the player freezes in midair, then plummets into the pit (with darkness cast in it).
Funnily enough, they weren't paralyzed. They got a feater fall spell off in time so that the cube fell into the pit beneath them. They didn't take any falling damage, but they did fall right back into the cube.
