Quick Opinion Needed: 2 best spells for a first level Druid

Henry

I was hoping to get a quick opinion poll about this issue.

Tomorrow I begin playing a first level halfling druid. This first level druid will have a 15 WIS, and therefore two first level spells to prepare. I am planning to venture into uncharted (literally) wilderness with the rest of my party. The party is fighter-heavy, with another cleric besides me, but I believe it is light on arcane support.

With this in mind, what do you feel are the two best spells I could pack from the list? My thoughts were to prepare

---Cure light, for emergency healing, and
---Entangle, to trip up foes.

Since I am first level, my money is very slim (75gp after basic equipment), and my level durations are quite short, also, so no buffing us up before setting out, and so forth.

Do you have any better recommendations?

I think you've got the two best all around 1st level spells there, already. Particuarly if you don't know what you're getting yourself into. Goodberry is nice, though, at 1st. It heals 2d4 HP and can sustain you like 2d4 hearty meals. But it's more usefull after combat, (though you do have a cleric) and on your first day out into the wilds you should still have provisions.

One other thing: I'd take a cure minor or two. Instant stabilizers, and thus always good to have at the low levels, even if you have heal.

Yep, entangle is *the* lvl 1 druid offensive spell,a nd a CLW is always good.

Druids are great :) EVen at 2nd level you get the chill/heat metal spells, and your offensive capabilities just go up from there :D

At 1st level, shillelagh can turn a druid into a combat monster compared to other 1st level characters.

Calm animals could be of use in the situation you describe as well, as it could allow the party to avoid some encounters with angry boars (and they are quite vicious for 1st levels) or other animals.

Entangle is a must have, but CLW can be done by the Cleric. The cleric can't calm animals or shillelagh, so I would suggest going for the druid only abilities.

Oh, one last thing, try to talk your DM into allowing you to spend some of that 75 GP on a scroll of CLW. Invaluable emergency backup for a 1st level party.

And definately get at least one cure minor. Best "don't bleed to death" thing out there.

Good Druid spells

I'd be tempted to do either:
  • Double up on Entangle. That way one encounter in a day doesn't shoot yer wad.
  • Entangle and then Obscurring Mist. The second is for that unexpected ambush or night attack, when the enemies can see you all, and you are all grouped cloely enough together to see what each is about to do. (Hint: run, regroup, attack on yer own terms.)

Nix th' Cure Light Wounds unless yer cleric is trigger happy. If this cleric is liable to waste all of his spells in combat (he shouldn't, but...{shrug}), then you'll need the curing. Otherwise stick to the 0 level cure spell.

Animal Friendship would be a very good one to use at some point in the wilderness. Bam, you've got up to a 2 HD ally right off the bat. And if you get that, then I'd take Entangle and Magic Fang (for your furry friend) as prepared spells. You could possibly switch Entangle for Shillegah and you and your buddy can be a lean mean melee machine. Though Entangle might be good if you're fighting lots of small critters instead of a few big creatures.

For 0-th level, definatley have a CMW or two ready, but also Flare. -1 to all attacks for 1 minute isn't bad at all, especially if you come up against one big enemy.

What do you have for sources? I mean what books is your Dm allowing?
