Quick question about Tripping

First Post
Since Tripping takes the place of an attack, you can do so as an AoO right? If that is the case, and your character has Improved Trip, can you trip with the AoO and then get the extra attack it grants?

Oh, if this has been discussed before, feel free to just point out where,

Thanks,

Yes, that's right.

You can't keep someone on the ground like that, though, because the AoO is resolved before the action.

Also, if you're not sure whether or not you'll be successful with the Trip attempt, you might not want to risk losing your attack.

Yes, but if you are not using a weapon, then you still must threaten to be able to get the AoO in the first (e.g. with IUS). Just having Improved Trip does not let you threaten anything.

Yes.

I'm sure it has, but you need the Search function to find it (Google + the site specifier doesn't help so much IMO).

Note that Improved Trip doesn't always grant you a free hit on someone you trip... only when the attack that you used to trip could have been a normal melee attack in the first place.

If you have a feat that grants you a free trip attack, for example (say, Elusive Target from CW), Improved Trip won't grant you an extra hit... because the extra attack is "as if you hadn't used the attack to Trip". And if you don't use the Elusive Target attack to trip, you can't do anything else with it.
