Probably Classic Traveller in 1977. I still have the LBB, along with my original subsector map and the school workbook I wrote up the planets in. I'm not absolutely sure it was my second RPG - someone else I knew began a Tunnels & Trolls game around the same time and that might have come just before Traveller.

Eternal Champion
Very quickly after starting with (Basic) D&D, where I was DM my friend Paul started a (Classic) Traveller campaign and we alternated adventures between the two for several years. Following that over time we added one-off adventures with RuneQuest, (FASA) Star Trek, MERP, and Stormbringer … and then we all went to different universities … good times 😊

The first RPG I owned was Classic Traveller (1977 edition, but I think 1978 printing). I worked out how to generate characters, but struggled to work out how to play the game.

A few years later I acquired Moldvay Basic. It was much easier to play by just following the procedures in the box. Having played some D&D, I was then able to play some Traveller.

The next non-D&D RPG I played was Rolemaster, which was my main game for nearly 20 years (1990-2008).

The Soloist

Adventurer
The actual order is vague in my memory. I might have played Melee with Wizards (by Steve Jackson) before D&D Holmes edition. Otherwise, it's either Traveller or Gamma World.
After we also played AD&D 1e, Star Frontiers, Toons, Top Secret and Dragonquest 1e. AD&D1e was our main game. We never played more than 1 to 3 sessions with the other RPGs.

my first RPG character was a Rolemaster high-warior-monk. While I knew of D&D before I played Rolemaster, D&D was my second RPG (but my first real campaign).

Besides a few forays with Rolemaster, my second real campaign was a WEG Star Wars game.

Later in college we played all kinds of games but D&D, Rolemaster, and Star Wars; these are to foundation stones the my RPG education.

Elder Thing
My mother bought me a copy of the 1986 MERP boxed set when I was like 10 or 11. I couldn't make heads or tails of it. A few years later I played my first TTRPG, which was 1st edition Earthdawn, and I loved it. And a year or two after that I was introduced to [2nd Edition A]D&D, and i was in love.

Palladium TMNT was my first non-D&D RPG. I don’t remember much about it beyond my character was a mutant porcupine who could use his quills as weapons. We probably played a handful of sessions before moving on to something else, which was probably GURPS or Star Frontiers.
