Quicker than the Eye feat - broken?

Considering that there are any number of magic items which allow rogues unrestricted sneak attacks, I think that 'Quicker than the Eye' is unlikely to be at the top of anyone's smack down list.

Is it useful, sure. Broken, no.

Whether the feint mechanism is itself broken is an entirely different and more interesting topic, but that has been apparantly covered. ;)

Part of the reason I cut it out completely was the third party feats designed to make it even better. Quicker than the Eye & Expert Tactician both come to mind.

While not core, they aren't third-party, either... they're from WotC books.

I agree with the whole waryness about sneak attacks. They're definately something that a rouge hybrid can make enough good use of to really mess with a game's balance.

As far as feigting goes, the basic idea is that you forgo an attack or two to create an opening. Mind you, I'm a 3rd Edition newbie, but I'd start with a feat along the lines of "Feigning is an attack equivalent action. Select a single opponent this round. If you attack that opponent next round, your first attack is at a bonus of some appropriate amount."

Maybe an appropriate amount would be +bab/2? Not really sure.
But then, you could expand that feat into a TWF version, where the offhand is used to create openings.

Then, if you were really crazy, an improved version of both feigns where you can gain a bonus to AC.

Hm. Maybe make it on a per attack basis, increasing to hit bonus depending on the number of attacks given to making an opening? In that case, you'd just have to be sure that if you decided to use your first two attacks in a round as feigns, it'd be a net bonus to your third attack roll.

Hope I havn't babbled on too much.

It is strong, but unless i'm mistaken an opponent can negate the chance of a melee qtte move with a simple five foot step. if the rogue is required to take a five foot step, he or she cannot use the move equivalent qtte and then take the sneak attack (unless I've misinterpreted the feat).

You've misinterpreted 5' steps.

You can't take a 5' step if you've moved any distance. An MEA (like drawing a sword, standing up from prone, or Quicker than the Eye) that doesn't involve moving any actual distance won't prevent a 5' step.

That's actually one thing I wish they would revise. Uncanny Dodge should be able to defeat the loss of a DEX bonus - it IS uncanny, after all. :) That way, barbarians and rogues should be unable to fall for feints & misdirections, because of their skill at being able to avoid sneak attacks AS they happen. But then, that's just me.

"Dodge should be able to defeat the loss of a DEX bonus - it IS uncanny, after all."

Well, maybe not that uncanny, though 'Uncannier Dodge' might make for an interesting feat.
