did those buttons just not appear? Your browser may not have finished loading the page (for whatever reason).
I've had that problem before where the quote, multiqote, quickreply, and edit buttons don't appear at all (but everything else did so i thought the page was 'ready') when in fact my connection had a hickup and didn't load, but hitting reload fixed it all.
