D&D General Race Has No Mechanics. What do you play?

I tend to just play gnome or human anyway (especially as Humans can grow to 8 ft tall (medium) and thus no need for goliath :)

II dont need mechanics to play up the gnome flavour, though giving him the Feylost background (Witchlight) would be helpful. Same could be said of goblin I suppose

otherwise Human

also havent been to a good rave for many many years

I've never noticed a signifcant difference whether a player character was an elf, human, dwarf, or goliath. The adventure will play out pretty much exactly the same way no matter what species the player characters are. I typically play humans and I'd just keep playing humans if any mechanical effect was totally divorced from species.

I have for decades been intrigued by duergar. The old line art and weirdness of the undertake couple with dwarf is hard to deny.

Though I would find normal poison effects and no con a bit of a let down!

I would still pick non humans I have an eversion to playing humans I feel none of the present options gets me hence I some times just play humans for the lack of hassle.

For myself, I usually choose human because it can fit so many concepts and doesn't come with certain baggage, e.g., regular elves are supposed to hate drow elves and vice versa. Race/lineage/whatever mechanics have little or nothing to do with my choice.

For the rest of my group, mechanics matter more to some players than others. One player loves drow, so that's her most common choice. Another often chooses gnomes, just because he loves RPing them. The only mechanic that consistently impacts their choice is darkvision.

re: 5.5 - From our discussions, they really like the idea of stat bonuses being tied to background instead of race, as this makes it easier to play some race/class combos that are (mechanically) a bit less optimal under current rules.

Probably I would avoid my favorite race, changeling, since that would be very difficult to pull off with no racial powers.

But plenty of others I like (half-elf, halfling, aasimar, genasi, kalashtar, leonin) would definitely be playable with no defined powers.

I’d be good with that campaign, no worries. I’d probably choose to play a character of whatever is the most-common species in the DM’s campaign.

In my youth, I wanted to play an immortal dextrous genius. That is to say: an elf.

In my adulthood, I want to play a semi-normal hero who steps up to right a wrong or overcome a challenge.
