This is a race I invented for the setting I used in one of my games.

T'Yevat - Sentient Penguins
The t'yevat are a race of sentient penguin-like creatures, although they are not truly penguins. Many t'yevat actually have "fingers" instead of flippers, and are often more muscular than normal penguins. Their primary export is rimesteel, a kind of glass-like metal that is almost as hard as adamantine. Only the t'yevat know how to find rimesteel under the ice sheets and glaciers of the north, and only they know how mine it. They trade the metal, along with carvings, jewelry, and other craft goods, to the humans of Snowstar in exchange for things like wood and fruits and vegetables, which are very rare in the north. Their leaders often bear weapons and jewelry made of rimesteel, usually carved into ice-like shapes and styles. They don't have what most people would consider to be government, and most individuals work independently. Crime is very rare, and those who commit one are exiled south, to find a way to live among the other races. This is often difficult for them, as they are incapable of speaking the languages of other races, just as other races are incapable of speaking theirs. During trade negotiations, the t'yevat must usually write out their side of the conversation on slates, or even use gestures and hand signs to convey meaning, as finding non-t'yevat who understand the language is rare.
