Raising familiars

Are there any published rules for what happens when a familiar gets raised?

The PHB covers what happens when a familiar dies. Our 12th-level sorcerer's familiar went down in a firestorm yesterday. The sorcerer failed the save, and lost 2400 XP.

Without other guidance, my plan is to rule that the XP loss is permanent, but if the familiar is raised it wil waive the year-and-a-day delay in getting a new familiar.

Thoughts?

I would probably just allow to raise the familiar with no further detrimental effect (the usual level loss has no effect on the familiar, because it has no levels and cannot lose HD).

Arguably the familiar could lose 2 points of con as it has no HD to lose.

IMO, that'd seem pretty mean, considering that it's already 'cost' 2400XP and 5000GP to get to this situation!

I'd probably go a little fruther: be tempted to provide some kind of RPG hook or kooky power, to represent the extra devotion the character has taken to raise their familiar...

not being very good or familiar ;) with the newer edition rules... can you cast raise dead on a familiar?

i mean is it of the type.. magical beast or humanoid or whatever...

or do you need another spell?

from the SRD: A slain familiar can be raised from the dead just as a character can be, and it does not lose a level or a Constitution point when this happy event occurs.

I checked Tomb & Blood last night, it has a blurb which indicates the familiar can be raised and the connection with the master is recreated. It does note that reincarnate results in a new creature that is not bound to the master.

My sorcerer's familiar is the one who got fried, by the way. We were lucky that was our only loss (so far).

Ah, right... Con is lost then not HD... wouldn't affect hit points, tho, just Fort save. ;)

Ok, but the part quoted above quite clearly says that there is no such loss. :)

Diaglo - That's a good point! Hadn't checked what you could actually use Raise Dead on. Apparantly it is Target: Dead creature touched these days...

Although that other passage in the text obviously clears it up!
