Random thoughts on Gamma World

I'm getting geared up for a Gamma World game right now myself, and I have to admit to be disapointed in the actual GW book. I haven't played any of the previous versions, didn't have many preconceptions, but it just wasn't what I was hoping for.

However.

What I've found myself doing over the past few weeks is putting together a sort of pseudo-"Player's Handbook" for my players. It's about 40% "Darwin's WOrld", 40% "Omega World", and maybe 20% "Gamma World". And so far, I think, it's looking pretty good.

I'm giving the PCs a lot of leeway when it comes to designing Mutant characters, encouraging them to use Savage Species, Star Wars, d20 Ctulhu, or whatever else they might like to base their freakish characters upon. As long as they're making characters that they *want* to play, I'll be happy.

Question that I have right now is about currency. I don't like DW's "corium standard", but I'm realizing that the d20 Modern wealth system don't work quite right either. I might go with an economy based on "brass" -- expended shell casings. Not quite as good as Wasteland's battle caps, but should do the trick....

We mostly use "corium" to define relative values (opposed to actually having people carry around corium like gold pieces). Depending on the state/setting of your PA game, I find to better to rely on barter instead of some standard currency. It’s easier on the GM and adds a PA flavor IMHO.

That's pretty much how I plan to run things once the game is up and running -- in practice, Walmarts will be few and far between in the post-apocalyptic wastelands. Not like Starbucks.

At this point, I'm just thinking in terms of the players equipping their characters for the first session of the game.

In one of my old 3rd edition Gamma World campaign there was a village that accepted credit cards. The cards themselves were the favored currency; Discover=CP, Visa/Mastercard=SP, Gold Cards=GP & American Express=PP (never leave home without it)
