D&D 5E Ranger Favored Enemy - Expanded Crit Range?

My group feels that the ranger favored enemy is a little lacking.

Granted we were used to direct additional damage etc, versus your chosen foe. The situational/environment bonuses in 5e are nice, but we feel it needs a bit more.

So, here's the idea.

Versus your favored enemy, you crit on a 19 or 20. (flavor: you have learned your foe's weaknesses)

Feel free to shout it out as the greatest, most elegant idea conceived, or feel free to elaborate on its borkeness.

We would not mind hearing your thoughts either way.

It's okay I guess. I was thinking about creating a whole Slayer build for the ranger, with more classic favored enemy bonuses.

Agree. I think a slayer build would be a more elegant solution than just a patch. But for now your idea works. Maybe even grant the ranger advantage in the first round of combat against favored enemies. Cannot be surprised by them, etc.

I like the way it's currently implemented. Combat bonuses for a favored enemy always are too campaign and DM dependent. Here the favored enemy is fluffy stuff that doesn't bother you too much if your campaign doesn't let you use them. The Hunter's prey, Defensive Tactics, etc chain seems a much nicer approach to combat bonuses because they can be applied to a wide variety of combat situations. I've always thought of that chain as 'where the favored enemy combat bonuses went'.
