Really put some time thinking about your background, and especially your traits, ideal, bond, and flaw.

Having that stuff down will really help you contribute meaningfully to roleplay so you're not just waiting for your opportunity to roll your die. It also helps the GM develop adventure hooks based on your backstory and personality.

As an archer you will probably want to go with the Hunter subclass, which is considered the better subclass anyway. Other than that...

Make Dex your highest stat. Get the Archery fighting style. When you get spells at 2nd level you will want to get Hunter's Mark.

That right there should make you a kick-butt archer. There are lots of other useful things you can do, but it depends on what type of character you want. Other than archery, what does your character do? What is he good at? As mentioned above, all of the backgrounds can help flesh out your character.

I have for spells hunters mark, cure wounds and hail of thorns with the sharpshooter feat. Just leveled up to 3 didn't know if there was anything important in how to play as a ranger
