Ranger, Paladin, Hexblade ... Define your *own* spellcasting fighter concept

You forgot a period.

;) :p

That wasn't a sentance; it didn't need a period.

Now to redeem myself by saying something relevant to the thread...

Ok, so, full BAB, d10 HD, good fort, and then a series of spells for imbuing weapons with elemental/alignment/whatever stuff, like Magic Weapon and Flame Arrow and Holy Sword; base their spells on charisma. As well, let them use sorcerer/wizard spells from scrolls, but not actually learn them.

What do you call them? Spellswords, mage-knights, or whatever similar name hasn't already been used in your setting.

I don't except any substitute for the mage blade, I welcome them all!

D'oh! I'm dyslexic, so I will always be confusing stuff like this. Thanks for pointing it out :)

Anyway, back to the topic at hand: I think the mage blade is the best fighter/spellcaster hybrid out there, hands down. There isn't even a whole lot of inherent flavor in the class. A magical warrior investing his weapon with power is no new thing. I just don't think anything else has come close.

I like the mageblade. We ported it over to normal D&D with spell knowledge limits like a bard, but the normal wizard/sorc spell list. It's worked fairly well, since he doesn't get a ton of spells, and doesn't get full spell progression (full level, but limited spell selection and only up to level 7 spells, and those at realy high level).

I reckon you could probably take the hexblade, drop the unusual class abilities for something more fightery (like some sort of bonus feat progression), and then say "pick any spells at all for your known spells" and that would work great.

Mind you, I'm the guy who says "drop clerics and give wizards access to every spell in the game"...

only vaguely related but undeserving of its own thread....

anyone tried a game without any full casters? I've read many times people discussing how full casters rule the roost at high levels, and I've seen it myself in the little I've played.

I did one that took the warmage and gave him a Cleric BAB, Simple weapons and light armor with one martial weapon proficiency. He got teh armorered mage stuff and got bonus feats from the fighters list instead of the sudden feats (though less often since it is a more flexible choice) and redid the Spell list to include self buffing spells and fighter useful spells. I imported a few cleric spells as well though named them differently but had same effects) It looked like it would work out well. Not as good as a fighter unless the spell buffed up had d8 HD so didn't have the hpts of a fighter and needed a better array of stats to be decent.

Would love to play one just to see how it would work out.

Basically, all we're looking for is a theme that evokes myzterious, mystical, religious or supernatural aspects (ie; something magical) to add to a fighter base. There are hundreds of possibilities ...

Pick anything in D&D that is mysterious, mystical, religious or supernatural. Dryads. Dragon Breath. Luck. Invisibility. Illusions. Bumblebees. Solars.

Then, toss in a smattering of abilities related to that theme, a few spells or spell-like abilities devoted to that theme and take away a few base fighter feats and/or abilities. There you go.
