D&D 5E Ranger

Touch a willing creature, the targets gets bark skin (Im not copying exactly here) and cant have AC less than 16 until the end of the spell no matter what kind of armor it has. So, it sounds to me like it sets base AC to 16.

Could play an elven ranger with Mage Armor cantrip. That would be 13 + Dexterity for their armor class without using a spell slot.

So you lose 1 AC with animals with a 15 Dexterity which is a number of them and you don't have to worry about losing it in melee or not having it available to cast.

Im not sure I followed that. If you are talking about Mage Armor...its still 3 AC short of Barkskin and you still have to lose a level 1 spell slot to cast it?

From what was said, Barkskin doesn't add in Dexterity, only makes the minimum AC you can have be 16. Mage Armor is 13 + Dexterity and with the Magic Initiate feat, it doesn't cost a spell slot.
