To expand my answer, I do play the ranger as is, but not as my primary class. Usually I add a level or two as a ranger to my rogues and psions, especially my egoists.

I will probably try the "Urban Ranger" variant in Masters of the Wild with my next rogue/ranger combo.

i play an MC Ranger and i'm having a blast with him. of course, he's only 2nd level, so i can't really comment on the supposed "balance" issues that everyone else seems to have yet, but i'm really enjoying it. i think it all boils down to what you want out of the game. the ranger, like the druid, isn't really for "power gamers." i like the character i created. so i'm having a lot of fun with him :)

What is everyone's fave variant. I like Monte's ranger but have not played one yet. I have been hearing alot about it being too powerful. But doesn't the Hit Point reduciton make up for that?

Negative Zero, I tend to go along your line of thinking. It's the concept that I wan't to play. Even though I like two-weapon fighting, I don't like being restricted being a big bow fan myself.

I use the WoT woodsman class.

I still allow the PHB ranger class (With the virtual feats spread out over 3 levels instead of 1) as a non-nature-loving class called a Gaurdian, which is basicly a paladin without the stringent doctrines.

Monte's Ranger

I currently have a Wood Elf 1st level Barbarian, 5th level Ranger (Monte's). I am very happy with how it's turning out. The Ranger is probably an even better 'jack-of-all-trades' then the Bard. Lots of skills, and feats, and spells...

I haven't decided for sure, but I am thinking of heading to the 'Fleetrunner of Ehlonna' PrC at 9th, so all my bonus spells will be in 2nd and 1st level.

Does the Woodsman from WoT balance well with the regular D&D classes since it was designed for a different game with different set of classes? Just wondering because I would like to use it.
