I partially agree with Plane Sailing- rangers don't necessarily maintain a maxed-out state with Wilderness Lore. I do think that for the very nature of the ranger, they should maintain at least 3/4 max. Afterall, its about survival.
But granting a bonus to Wilderness Lore as a class ability, which I have seen before, strikes me as both a good benefit, and as a problem. I want the ranger to decide between getting better at survival or something else. That's one of the reasons why I like the skills that are central to this or that class as just another skill.
Now, special case bonuses to it are fine.
As for Knowledge[monsters], I wasn't advocating making that skill. I have never been fond of those infinite skills (since the idea of such a skill would typically be Knowledge[giant racoons] or something. I was thinking that the ranger could make a Ranging check to see if his experiences or fireside tails would give him a tip or two when dealing with a creature found out in the wilds. So I suppose, only for animals, beasts, magical beasts, plants, humanoids, dragons, oozes, and aberrations.
I think Frostmarrow's counter abilities idea could be good, but the examples imo are either too specific or too not-ranger specific.
As to everything else, I must now go, and will respond later.
