I've been there as well. I have a job/wife/kids/grad school/church and other things that I have on the go. For me the answer was using published materials. This was a blow to me as I love homebrewing, however I just didn't have the time for it anymore. Also I switched games. Spycraft is great and is set up to be easy on the DM when preparing.
I had a split with my gaming group of about 7 years (doesn't beat your time but is probably longer than a lot of others here). Myself and the other DM were pretty close friends, for some reason my friend got it in his head that DMing was a popularity contest and that he had to run me down to the other players when I wasn't there. It was a pretty ugly time. He was telling me what a great DM I was then telling everybody else how awful I was and how good he was. Anyhow something happened in the group between this other DM and one of the players that split the group as everybody took sides (only one player managed to stay neutral and play in both groups). Anyhow the split and finding new players was perfect.
It's kinda hard to understand the situation for you as I don't know you and your post seemed a little vague. Anyhow think it over and do what you think is best for you and your wife.
