Rant: Why must thing always be obvious in D&D?

More Realmslore clarifications, not applying directly to Li's campaign, but for those interested.

It is also partly the fault of the setting. Forgotten Realms specifically states that a deity's power is directly proportional to their number of worshipers.
There are sources which seem to say one is the sole determinant of the other, but they're poorly phrased, easily misunderstood simplifications. 'Directly proportional' and similar language, though, isn't used.
Shar, as one of the few (relatively speaking) Greater Deities, therefore, must also be amongst those deities with the most worshipers.
As I mentioned, Faiths and Pantheons itself states otherwise -- and you could gather as much by her narrow 'psychological' appeal. Like other evil gods of the Realms, she receives appeasement worship from many more people than worship her reverently.

We don't even require PCs to have one and only patron deity (like in FR).
Although most folk in the Realms have one god which they worship above (if only slightly above) others, they aren't required to have a 'patron deity' in any formal sense, and even priests sometimes serve more than one.

Required, no. However, since they cannot be raised or resurrected without a patron deity, most will.

In fact, the FRCS states:

"Everyone in Faerun knows that those who die without a patron deity to escort them to their proper judgment in the land of the dead spend eternity writhing in the Wall of the Faithless, or disappear into the hells of the devils or the infernos of the demons."

I imagine almsot everyone has a patron deity in Faerun (which doesn't rule out worshiping other deities).

As I said, 'most folk in the Realms have one god which they worship above (if only slightly above) others'. The FRCS's emphasis on a 'patron deity' is known to be overstated, partly for purposes of rules simplicity. The resurrection factor is very minor, since most people don't anticipate either wanting to be or having the wherewithal to be resurrected, and its mechanics aren't widely understood.

Most do, but don't necessarily think of it in those terms.

Just consider it to be my typically childish response to the demand that every phrase include "IMHO' or "YMMV" or else be taken in the worst possible light. Feel free to use it if you like.
