It's actually quite a useful feat. And thanee, yes it is designed to give you a chance against improved grab. It's saved one of my players many times. It's hard to grapple them when they keep knocking off the grapple attempt with a halberd. Combat Reflexes works well with this feat.

This part is obsolete, or isn't it?

If you hit and damage with an AoO, there is no ensuing grapple check, since the grapple attempt is automatically negated.

Or does that (badly worded) feat grant this bonus for an Improved Grab grapple check instead of automatically negating the grapple attempt as usual? It surely seems like this would be the intention.

Yes, that is what it does.

Hmmm... thinking about multiple attacks and Combat Reflexes.

Didn't Combat Reflexes only grant one AoO per opponent per round?

I surely think it should grant one AoO per opportunity, but I believe the official version of the feat does not work this way!

You would think, but it doesn't. :(

Admittedly, it's not a fantastic feat, but it does have its usefulness. So far, my group has lost a total of about 7 PC's to Improved Grab monsters, and Close-Quarters combat kept my paladin from being number 8.

Divine Might + Smite Evil (10th level) + Close-Quarters Fighting. Bad illithid. No brain cookie. :)
