  • Two stars. There are better options, but take it at a discount or free.

  • One star. Waste of money. Give it away and get something else.

I love mine. My only complainta are I wish they made a set of clear ones so I could slide pre-printed maps underneath, and that the dark gray is a little drab -- my blood squiggles don't show up as well as I'd like.

They are very durable, easily reconfigurable, and reasonably priced. Even when I don't use mini's I still use the Tact-Tiles to sketch things out. Plus, I can use the leftovers for initiative lists, tracking damage, etc.

The gridlines are fine, and complaining about having to write over the gaps is just nit-picky. It's a lot better than have to deal with permanent creases in a roll-up battlemat any day.

Well I gave them a 5 on the poll.

And like several others here have already said they are the best thing out there.

I have been singing their praises since I first got mine over 2 year ago.

I have two sets of 12 for a total of 24 tiles giving me the room I need for the large play area I like to have, along with the ability to prepare ahead of time.

I've seen the new design and think its a great improvment on something that was very good already. If mine hadn't held up as well as they have after regular use for over 2 years I would be all over the new ones. But I can't justify the cost right now since mine are in such good shape.

AS for the weight, I have a small portable plastic file box that I keep then in along with my SQWire Spell Templates (another great tool), md pens and cleaning supplies. This way I grab the box and I have everything I need for mapping.

I take them with me where ever I go to game, so I can bring others the wonders of Tac-Tiles.

The one accessory that would make them better would be colorform like objects to use on them, like trees, stumps, wells, chests, furniture, etc. . .

My only quibble is weight, and this only applies when I have to travel with them in addition to books. If you stay at home to play, this minor aspect is not applicable.

Tact-tiles are great, though as smootrk points out they're on the heavy side. For that reason, I also have a couple Steel Sqwire Flip Mats. The Flip Mat was nominated for an ENnie, and it deserved it. It's a lightweight, dry or wet erase, foldable grid. I use it when I'm running a game at a friend's place or at a con, any situation where carrying weight is an issue.

Basically, between those two I'm all set with erasble mats. I'll never go back to a roll up, wet erase mat.

Okay, next question(s)?...

Is the box worth it? What sort of dimensions should I look at for an alternative carrying/storage unit?

Box? Do you mean the thing you get for the $6 difference (or what it was)? It's cardboard, it does what it's supposed to do, but it's not really anything for eternity. Mine had the first tear after the first use.

I love the tact-tiles, but don't expect too much from that box.

Absolutely the best purchase gaming wise I have ever made.
I will never go back to paper/wet-erase mat.
I would like some more some day to expand even more.

The ability to pick up a piece and place it somewhere without redoing the whole map is its biggest selling point to me.

If they ever come out with colorform-like top-down view objects to go with it I would buy those in a heart beat.

That box did indeed suck. Ripped the handle off mine quickly too.

It has been over a year and my box is still basically fine - a small tear - but still stays shut and the handle is fine.
