Ravenloft Boardgame?

I just got an email from Chapters.Indigo.ca saying that my preorder of this game has been pushed back to September 21st! ...From August 31st. The price was right, but are these guys screwing me around? (They're a big bookseller here in Canada, with online prices on par with Amazon.ca's.)

I've ordered and paid for the game... now I have to see when it arrives.

Wizards Australia have been consistently late with 4E releases. I hope this fares better.

Cheers!

Just to chime in........I played in a demo at GenCon on Friday Night. 4 of us played a game in just under 1 1/2 hour, which included us learning the rules.

Closest comparison for me was definitely Warhammer Quest. Seems like lots of fun. I've already preordered!

That's part of what has me so excited about this game. The longest play time I've heard is 1.5 hours with no rules pre-knowledge. For a dungeon crawl, that's very very good. It means you can expect to run this in a game night without having to give up other games.

I have this on preorder, but I'm waffling over I'm going to like it or just raid it for parts.

Two questions:

1) Can you build anything that resembles the I6 Ravenloft map with the included tiles?

2) What minis come with the game? Surely, one HAS to be Strahd (did they include Cyrus Belleview?).

1) Absolutely not. Purists will probably be happy pretending that this is just a spooky haunted castle rather than an attempt to recreate the classic adventure. It's very combat-focused, with all of the roleplaying elements (that I saw) involving smack-talk between rounds. That said, it's also a cooperative game, so you're generally helping the other players rather than laughing at them. I should point out that I only played one of more than a dozen scenarios in the box (ours involved tracking down and fighting a dracolich), so some may involve more RP than this one, but I kind of doubt it. It's not really a roleplaying game.

2) TONS of minis. There's a Strahd mini, about 5 or 6 player character minis, TONS of undead stuff like flaming skeletons, ghouls, some rat swarms, a huge dracolich, and what I'm guessing was an undead white dragon. The minis are one of maybe five base colors (including clear). Other than the PCs all being one color, the rest of the minis seem to be grouped in colors as well (I'm not sure the rhyme or reason to this, though I suspect there is one--most of the undead stuff was white, for example). There are some "clear" minis in the set. 42 minis in all. All of them are repurposed from earlier D&D Minis sets, though I understand that a few came from cancelled sets and have not been seen before.

Despite the fact that the minis are unpainted, I think they represent more than $65 of value, and when combined with tiles that are quite versatile (despite not being able to recreate the original maps) the game is worth it even without the game itself, which was really fun.

Thanks for the quick answer! I'm a little disappointed you can't seem to build parts of the original castle, but you'd probably either need a static board or lots of tiles for that. I suspect the "clear" minis are ghosts/spirits?

...And, uh, when can we expect to see a Rise of the Runelords board game that has you tromping all over Golarion [and having pickle fights with goblins?] (You are already hashing this out with FFG, right?) ;)

Yeah, I think the clear guys are mostly ghosts and stuff. I seem to remember that the flaming skeleton was clear, but we played in a bar, and you know....

I'd love to do a Pathfinder board game some day. We've certainly discussed the possibility, but we'd have to make it awesome indeed be in the league of this Ravenloft game. I'm sure it will happen some day, but we're focused mostly in other areas at the moment.

In the unboxing done by mearls [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utYE0c7u3d0"]here[/ame], he says that the colors correspond to various difficulties of the monsters. Since he takes all the minis out, it also shows just how much comes in the box.

oh noes! kobolds have invaded Ravenloft!!!

hmmm...not the monster I would have thought to pick for a Ravenloft set. I think I would have chosen some Strahd zombies instead, with a Zombie/Ghoul Lord. I'm also surprised there's no "vampire spawn" to work with the Strahd mini.

oh well, hopefully it's a fun game - and from the sounds of those who've played it, it's successful in that regard. Now I'm curious to see what's going to be included in the "Wrath of Ashadarlon" game.
