Raw Magic, A Warning

Downloaded the piece from Emerald Night and tried opening it in AppleWorks. Didn't work, some error in the file. So I tried using MacLink Plus to see what the problem was. Found the usual MS malarky ("You must use our standards and pay for the privilege."), fixed that, and tried opening the file again. This time around AppleWorks opened it as a Spreadsheet. And since even one version of Excel has trouble recognizing Excel spreadsheets made by different versions of Excel, I got nothing usable.

On top of which, the document messed with my browser. So I had to quit Netscape and start it up again.

So be careful with Raw Magic from Emerald Night, or most any other document made using Microsoft Word.

(Were it within my power, Bill Gates would have to pay $50.00 per occasion to everyone he has inconvenienced with his 'stuff'. If that didn't put him seriously into debt I'd be damned surprised.)

As the author of the piece and the owner of the site, I'd like to ask exactly what you downloaded if you got a spreadsheet. The piece in question is actually a Word document, done in Word XP. If you could, try downloading one of the other pieces from the site, and let me know if that causes the same problems.

That being said, if anyone else has this problem, please let me know.

It's Microsoft's doing. They are the ones who insist on using their own proprietary "standards" in a blatant attempt to monopolize the software business.

Yes, I was ticked, BTW, when I sent that email.

There are word processors out there besides Word. Corel makes a nice office suite for Windows, and Apple's AppleWorks is a nice 'light' office suite with a Windows version. No matter which WP you pick up they're sure to produce RTF files better than the bison pizza Word produces.

(Did you know people have written programs just for cleaning up Microsoft RTF?)

Heck, send me a text version of the file and I'll format the thing and translate it into PDF for you. You even get a choice of Palantino or Times Roman for the font. (The only real choice I have.:(:))

Anyway, thinks for the reply.

PDF please. And not just for me.

You know, a compilation of the 'best' homebrew from Emerald Night in PDF could be popular.

 Who's been blabbing???

Seriously, though, we are already doing this :) It's due out shortly, and is going to run to about 130 pages. It will include stuff not found on the site, too. And it is all free!

The file is on it's way. Let me know what you think.
