re:spells, replacing one energy type w/another What do you think?

So what is the general feeling about the idea of replacing one type of energy with a different type?
For example: Instead of just having a "Fireball" what about a spell that is identical but replaces the Fire with Cold or Acid or Electricity?
Same for Lightning bolts and any of the spells that use an energy type?

Granted not all energy types at this point may be equal?

It seems that maybe Force and Sonics could prove more useful than Fire, Cold, Acid, and Lighning due to various resistances and immunities (re:the various Outsider types) althought the "Resist/Endure Elements" types of spells don't seem to be concerened with this?

SO is this idea balanced and useful?
And if so, how would you handle it?
Each as a Different spell to be learned seprately or could the change be made when memorizing, or upon casting the spell like the Resistance spells?

Is there already a product out addressing this idea?
(Even if there is I would still be interesred in opinions about this)

Thanks all!

I believe there is a feat in the Tome and Blood called Engery Admixture that lets you change the engery type of a spell.

Energy admixture is in there as well - it allows you to mix the elements, for example making a fire/lightning ball.

Admixture doubles the damage. So instead of throwing a 10d6 Fireball, you'd throw a 10d6 Fireball and a 10d6 Sonicball with the same spell. I'm not a big fan of Admixture; I'd much prefer a +1 spell level metamagic that just split the damage 50/50. So a formerly 10d6 fireball would be 5d6 fire/ 5d6 sonic ball.

Energy Substitution's been covered, pretty well

I don't think substituting Force damage would work well, while keeping the spell at it's original level. Force damage nasty stuff.

I agree. Very hard to resist and negates etherealness miss chances. Monte Cook's book of Eldritch Might 1 & 2 have some force spells whohc are balanced, but they are weaker than Fireball in Most occasions: they are still very useful if you know what you are up against though.

Incorporeal miss chances.

Etherealness doesn't give a miss chance - it gives flat-out immunity to just about everything except Force Effects.

I'd imagine so. It's a reasonably thing to have as a feat - just not with the +0 spell level moditification that Energy Sub. normally has.

If there isn't one, let's make it!:

Force Substitution (Metamagic)
You can make your damaging spells do force damage, rather than their normal energy type. Etherial and Incorporeal creatures everywhere live in fear of you.

Benefit: Any spell modofied with this feat has all damage it deals treated as force damage; this includes the ability to affect incorporeal and etherial creatures within the spell's area.

Special: A spell modified with this metamagic feat takes up a spell slot one (1) level higher than the spell's actual level.

Bam, there ya go. Force Substitution.
