Reach Weapons, Readying and Attacks of Opportunity

Of course, this kind of situation is what the Stand Still feat is invented for! Get your readied attack (for double damage), then get an AoO. If the latter hits, the Stand Still feat kicks in and prevents the movement! This leaves the charger 10 feet away from you, probably unable to complete the charge, with quite a bit of damage for his trouble.

You are aware that, as with many noncaster feats, Stand Still had the bejesus nerfed out of it, right? It now only works on foes that leave adjacent squares.

What you're thinking of is now the province of the Pin Down feat, which requires 11 levels of Fighter to obtain.

No, I was not aware of that. I've been caught Not Doing My Research, it seems.

Is it just me, or does it still seem strange that "monster feats" still exist and are not balanced and folded into the regular feat system. They change stuff like Stand Still almost to uselessness, but they leave the likes of Hover, Fly-by Attack, and Awesome Blow as potent feats easily obtained by the appropriate monster. Compare the difficulty of obtaining Fly-by Attack compared to Spring Attack, and consider that Fly-by Attack is almost certainly a more powerful feat!

PF's solution to that discrepency across the board has been "restrict, restrict, restrict! the players' access to monster stuff!"

Whether it's polymorph effects no longer turning you into a creature; animal companions not actually being...the animals but with different stats entirely, or PFS outright banning the use of Bestiary feats -- even for monster creatures like animal companions!; or IUS for monks despite being a natural weapon getting an explicit no-havsies-for-you! note in Improved Natural Attack; or just plain old avoiding the LA and non-humanlike creatures as PCs thing altogether...

PF just seems to try and limit PC access to the bestiary as much as possible. That way, they don't need to bother with balancing the bestiary. Cause no one cares if the monsters are broken. Only the guy in charge ever gets to see their exact stats, and is free to tweak and fudge as he sees fit. So whatever.

I can try to dig it out, it was a favorited post of mine before EnWorld apparently scrapped that handy feature. In a "what were the problems of 3E?" type thread, Set had an EXCELLENT post about how everyone looks at balance from the PHB side and ignores that summoning, and polymorph, and so forth wouldn't be so gosh darn broken if the monsters weren't so insanely unreasonable. But instead all everyone does is look to take the nerf bat to the PHB stuff while the monsters are laughing their heads off.

The more time goes on, the more relevant his post becomes....
