Awfully Cheerful Engine Read Sandy Petersen's Foreword to the Awfully Cheerful Engine!

Sandy Petersen is one of the authors of 1986’s award-winning Ghostbusters roleplaying game. Not only was that frightfully cheerful roleplaying game the first ever RPG to use a dice pool mechanic, it was also one of the main inspirations for the Awfully Cheerful Engine! https://www.awfullycheerfulengine.com/foreword

More than just Ghostbusters...he was one of the original authors of Call of Cthulhu, has been credited on all 7 editions of that game, and wrote several levels for the original DOOM video game in 1993, as well as being listed on titles Gen-X gamers will remember like Civilization, Pirates!, and Quake. (So if you thought that tentacle-faced thing on the big green blocks in the Tower of Babel looked like Big C...yeah.)
