Reccomend a game for me...

I echo diaglo.

The Alternity game mechanic was the precurser to the d20 system. There are skills with ranks - the rolls work differently though with a high level of situational modifiers and steps (i.e., changing die for a modifier). - and lots of guns.

Check out Alternity.net or Tequilastarrise.net for more info/background on the base game.

There was a Gamma World setting for Alternity and a Dark Matter one too (a lot like TV show what was it , oh yeah X-Files).

It sound's like you have a real case of "I don't want to play D20, but I don't know what I do want".

So I'll recommend my favorite; Traveller, Classic or GURPS. GURPS makes every thing go better.

I'd also recommend Alternity, except it's out of print and can be hard to get a hold of.

Spacemaster is fun but I havent' seen any new support for it in a while.

GURPS Traveller has a wide range of support but GURPS just underwent edition change. I havent' compared the new and old systems yet so couldn't tell you how extensive the changes are.

GURPS Space: Nothing says GURPS like space. GURPS handles sci-fi very well and has several campaign books devoted to various aspects of it. GURPS Space 3rd edition is probably one of the best sci-fi books.

Hero: I haven't checked out Alien Wars or the other setting book, but Hero does some things better than GURPS in my opinion so they might be worth checking out.

Warhammer 40K: Maybe you're bored of RPGs? Warhammer 40K is tabletop that takes place in the far future and takes a lot of fantasy troupes and puts them into a science fiction setting with good results.

Somewhere buried ina box is an old copy of spacemaster, not sure how different from the current version it is. Unfortunately, among my group spacemaster suffers from the rolemaster stigma..so getting them to play it might be a bit tough.

I have considered GURPS. I have the tech books (low tech, high tech, ultra tech 1+2), plus space. Maybe ifI can find the psionics book Id be set. As far as the edition change goes...their web page as much as says the fluff from the previous book is still good, but the rules will have to be converted. Guess Ill have to pass on 4E.

Never heard much about Hero.

I have played warhammer, and I am no stranger to mini's games. I just dont care much for anything white dwarf puts out. Ill play if its the only game in town, but often it isnt.

I've been sitting on the fence about gurps, maybe Ill dig for them and give them a try. I just want to go 180 degrees from what Ive been doing lately, I figured maybe a new system (or an old one I havent read in a while) might do the trick.

Thanx for the input, keep'em coming!

P.S. How does Alternity handle things? What are its mechanics in other words?
