Recommend a Romantic Movie

Also, I could be remembering wrong, but I believe one of the story lines in Joy Luck Club also has lovers that decide they can not be together... (but, again, I could be mixing this up with another movie).

On another note, does the couple get together at Crouching Dragon Hidden Tiger? I remember everything up until the end for some reason. Anyway, that may be another choice depending on how it ends :-D

I, uhmm...uh, saw this movie *cough* six times in the theater. What can I say? I really liked it.

Do I have to turn in my man card now?

No, you just use the excuse I do; that I'm obsessed with Nicole Kidman.

First time I watched it solely for seeing her in the movie. It discovered it was one of the most annoying movies that I could not help but watch.

I give a third recommendation for Shakespeare in Love. Also good for seeing how filthy cities used to be...

If you want a film that is guaranteed to have any slightly emotionally sensitive person in tears by the end due to star-crossed love, try Sommersby. I watched it with two ladies, neither of whom are particularly flighty, and both were crying at the end.

Room with a View. The lovers are not really star-crossed, but they are kept apart by... other complications.

Cyrano de Bergerac (French version w/ Depardieu, or old English version w/ Jose Ferrer) is like 10 zillion times better than Roxanne. So see the real thing, not the ersatz remake.

I was going to say Last of the Mohicans, but the lovers are not really star crossed. However, it is kind of a gamer-y movie, what with all the running and the hand-to-hand combat and such.

Also having seen all three, I would still completely disagree. However, the Jose Ferrer version is another favorite film of mine. It's just no Roxanne.

No, Casablanca is exactly what he wants:

Ilsa is waiting for Laszlo. While waiting for Laszlo, Ilsa meets Rick. Rick falls in love with Ilsa. Ilsa falls in love with Rick. Ilsa still loves Laszlo. Laszlo returns. Laszlo still loves Ilsa. Ilsa loves both Rick and Laszlo. Ilsa chooses Laszlo, but still loves Rick.

See? ;)

Wait, are you sure that isn't from "Real World" on MTV? :p

It was mentioned in another thread but Notebook is a prime example of this genre. Also a decent romantic comedy that fits the bill is "A Lot Like Love" with Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet.

Meg Ryan seems to have done a lot of them.
And the best is "Joe Versus the Volcano". Its one of my favorite films. Its a swimmingly loony love letter to its characters, the movies, and the human race.

Really. Its a terrific film.
