Recommend an HDTV...

For a bit larger set, I would start with a 50' or so rear projection. You should be able to find plenty of excellent ones for under $2500.

50' projection TVs for less than $2500, eh? Somehow, I'm thinking he doesn't have a room that big :D

No deeper than a 36" tube, and if set up correctly it looks great from as little as six feet. Of course, that is only with good sources such as DVD and HDTV. CRT Projection sets still don't do great with low res, soft sources like TV.

My last set up had my nose at 6-7 feet back and it looked fantastic. I'm a little further back in my new apartment and it lacks the same punch.

Edit: Heck, they are even cheaper than I thought.

Err, I think you missed the point. You typed 50' (fifty foot), not 50" (fifty inch). Hence the oversized smiley.

I haven't seen a Panasonic I've liked in years, and the same goes for GE/RCA (sorry, The_Universe, but I'm picky ).
To each his (or her) own. Mine has a crystal clear picture, I can sit up close if I need to, and the price tag agreed with my wallet. It doesn't have a lot of additional features (pretty much none, in fact), but it gives up nothing in picture quality to some of the "higher quality" brands.

So direct-view LCD tv's aren't quite 'there yet'? I've noticed they're become extremely popular. Could anyone go into a little more detail? Size isn't my main concern, image quality is.
I'm luvin' my Sony 32' 16x9. Got it for just under $900 and the picture is fantastic. I use it mostly for DVDs and videogames (Xbox, PS2) and haven't picked up the HD feeds yet. I shopped around a ton last year and compared the LCDs and even though I need at least 2 other people to move the TV around the picture quality, especially for the price is FANTASTIC. Even now when browsing stores I'd have to pay out the rear for a plasma/flat screen and that's simply not worth at the moment - not for the prices they are asking. And the screen doesn't look better than what I have now.

When I get a bigger place I'll spring for a bigger TV (probably a Sony again) but if you are looking in the low-30 inch range you really can't go wrong. Of course, the only problem is the weight and bulk. Otherwise, no complaints. Just make sure to map out the area ahead of time. I sprung for the Sony stand (another $200) so it fits nice and snug at one side of the room with the surround sound setup and consoles resting next to it. I don't have alot of space to begin with but considering a dresser used to be where the TV is now I didn't lose much space at all.

I've had a 65 inch projection Toshiba HDTV for a couple of years, and I am quite pleased with it. My only issue is that it does not have the newer HDMI all-digital connection, which would have reduced the number of cables behind my entertainment center considerably :\
