Recommendations for external Hard Drives

I've had good luck with Maxtor and Western Digital, although I never use the backup/system restore software that they come with. Too many potential nightmares. I'm more concerned with backing up important files and data. If I have a total meltdown, I'd rather do a reinstall anyway.
