Recruiting! In the Service of Cyre [4ed Eberron]

I'm sorry, Shay. I didn't mean to say that Dev isn't going to be able to shack up with the Prince. The two of you are destined to be together!

Although Alaric will probably be confused when it happens. Or maybe he suspected it all along...

How old is everyone? Oargev is 17, Alaric is 19, and I'm not sure, off the top of my head, where everyone else is.

Info-dump Part 1: Recent History.

Year 952: Thom Trannith is Born

Year 955: Breland, Aundair, and Cyre form an alliance to destroy Thrane. This offensive proves unsuccessful.

Year 956: Valaes Tairn mercenaries claim the southern portion of Cyre as Valenar. Queen Dannel publically condemns the move, but does nothing to take back the land. Cyre continues to employ the Valenar war-bands as mercenaries. Cyre’s strength and the Queen’s authority is at an all-time low.

Year 958: Aundair withdraws its long-standing support of Queen Dannel’s claim to the crown of Galifar. Their new purpose for waging war is to restore Aundair’s borders.

Year 961: King Boranel of Breland takes a Cyran noblewoman as his bride, but refuses to discuss any political connections in relation to his queen.

Year 962: Karrnath and Thrane begin a long campaign against each other, leaving Cyre free to rebuild their armies and defenses.

Year 964: Goblin raids into southern Cyre begin.

Year 965: Cannith starts mass-producing and selling Warforged.

Year 968: Prince Brusst of Cyre is born to Queen Dannel. A few days later, he dies, casting the queen into a deep depression.

Year 969: Darguun is formally founded, claiming lands from Cyre and Breland.

Year 971: Queen Dannel finally begins coming out of her depression and seeks to strike a devestating blow against Karrnath. Alaric ir’Drake is born to General Marius ir’Drake while Marius is leading a wing of Cyre’s invasion of Karrnath. The third siege of Korth begins.

Year 972: Varis d’Lyrandar is born. Marius ir’Drake leads the charge that breaches the walls of Korth. He manages to kill the crown prince of Karrnath, Prince Drago, and wounds King Jaron. Jaron later dies from his wounds. The residents of Korth still manage to expel the invaders from the city.

Year 973: Queen Dannel ir'Wynarn of Galifar, Protector of Cyre, gives birth to her only child, Prince Oargev ir'Wynarn. The next morning, she is forced to give the order to withdraw from the 3rd Siege of Korth, withdrawing troops to Cyre from Karrnath. Despite the failure of the siege, General Marius ir’Drake is promoted to Lord High General, leading all of Queen Dannel’s armies.

Year 974: Thrane’s firebombing of Karrnathi city Rekkenmark leads Breland, Aundair, Cyre, Zilargo, Karrnath, and most of the Dragonmarked houses to sign a document threatening to unite in order to burn Thrane to the ground if they ever use such tactics again.

Year 975: Thom Trannith, having distinguished himself in the arcane arts, is employed as a tutor for the court.

Year 976: Keeper Tagor of Thrane seeks peace with Cyre. These diplomatic negotiations fail, sabotaged by Silver Flame Fundementalists led by Cardinal Krozen.

Year 978: Keeper Tagor's offers of peace are renewed. Cyre and Thrane decide to band together against Karrnath in the north. When Breland begins harrying Thrane in the south, and Cyre refuses to help, Thrane abandons the northern offensive and turns against both Breland and Cyre.

Year 979: Cyre retaliates and invades Thrane. The Massacre at Arythawn Keep is committed by a unit of Cyran warforged.

Year 982: Kraken is given to Cyre by House Cannith, one of a number of Warforged produced to replace the defective, overly-aggressive warforged that committed the Arythawn Keep atrocity.

Year 983: Thrane sends a legion, led by 4 Angels called "The Messengers," to invade Cyre. City after city falls, and much of western Cyre is controlled by Thrane. General Marius ir'Drake is killed in the invasion. Young General Alvos ir’Brillik saves much of Cyre after his fall. Kraken is reassigned as a royal bodyguard when his unit is wiped out, guarding Prince Oargev as he is smuggled out of Cyre to avoid the Thrane invasion.

Year 984: The Eastern Legion of Thrane leaves Cyre when the 4 Messengers mysteriously give up the fight. Prince Oargev meets a Lyrandar apprentice named Varis when sailing back home from hiding.

Year 988: Breland recognizes Valenar's independence, earning the loyalty of most of the Valaes Tairn. Seeking a way to replace the loss of troops, Cyre pays for the service of the Lhesh Haruuc and his army of Darguun goblinoids.

Year 989: Varis d’Lyrandar becomes a full-fledged journeyman of his house. He decides to serve as a liaison to Cyre’s court for house Lyrandar, arranging most of their over-sea transportation and weather needs. There he becomes close with his old friend, Prince Oargev.

Year 990: Prince Oargev turns 17. He is given command of a hand-picked troop of heroes with which to complete missions of state for his mother, Queen Dannel. He asks his childhood friends Dev and Alaric to join, as well as more recent friend and companion Varis d'Lyrandar. His mother asks his arcane tutor, Thom, to advise him. Prince Oargev's warforged bodyguard, Kraken, as has been the custom these last seven years, guards the prince.

Kraken would be on the younger side of things. His backstory only goes back a few years at most, and I see no reason that he needs to have been made earlier than that. Being younger gives more potential for character growth I think, and that's what I'm going for here. Maybe kind of like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2, but protecting a prince instead of a kid.

Maybe Kraken was created in the early 980's, in the production order that replaced the "overly aggressive" Warforged that committed the massacre at Arythawn. In your history, when your unit was wiped out, could have been sometime in 983/4, by the invading Thrane forces.

Is somewhere between 7 and 10 young enough for you?

Hee hee!

No no, that was meant as a joke. An IC reaction, not an OOC one. :)

I'm quite adamant that this RP hook/background trait place no sense of "obligation" on anyone towards any particular outcome. Tragic romance is often even cooler than warm fuzzy romance. :)

Agreed. I am excited, however, to see how it plays out.

And to GM, the date of my father's death works nicely. Why don't we name him Marius ir'Drake?

Thanks to everyone for my chance to play here. Looks like I'm the last one to enter the boat and thanks again to everyone who voted for Varis

I had a wacky idea and I wanted to run it by players and GM. It's a little weird, so if anyone's uncomfortable with the idea just say so and I'll say no more about it.

Though changelings can assume the shape of either gender, they're not asexual like doppelgangers; they're born one sex or the other. I was thinking perhaps Dev had actually been born female, and that she's secretly nursing a crush on the Prince...an actual relationship would be forbidden of course; the difference in station partly, but mostly due to her duties to prince, crown and Cyre and how such emotions could interfere with them. The Prince may not even know Dev's 'real' form is female.

It'd be a fun RP hook, and has the potential for entertaining 'Cyrano' moments should the Prince ever develop an eye for someone else. :)

Great idea. We just need a female (or otherwise male-attracted) (N)PC who secretly loves Dev...
But this will maybe distract us all to much from the main story ;)

Sorry for the double-post. How about some character backgrounds, yeah?

...

[sblock=Varis d'Lyandar]I admire your devotion to our homeland, friend. I've never gone much past the borders of Cyre, but our land is indeed a glorious one. I hope you'll find me a fitting leader. By the way, let's try to keep that temper in check, shall we?[/sblock]
...

Great and cool idea. We know each other only recently, you being the prince's childhood friend and me not knowing him as a child!?

Sounds great. Varis will be 18, nearly the same as the prince, but a bit more experienced. (Just realized they are both half-elves.)

Since the Last War shifts so frequently, here are the current, prevailing attitudes of most Cyrans, concerning other nations:

[sblock]Thrane: The most aggressive, untrustworthy, and dangerous enemy facing Cyre. They started this war, and while we’ve tried friendship with them over the years, they’ve betrayed us every time. Young people in Cyre (most of you PCs, with the possible exception of Thom) see Thrane as the main enemy.

Karrnath: The evil empire to the north who has tried to break us again and again. We’ve been fortunate that they have had such misfortune these recent years, but it is just a matter of time before they turn their eyes south again. Regent Morenna has been sending occasional raids against us, but nothing we can’t handle while we must deal with bigger problems.

Breland: We aren’t allies, but there hasn’t been hostilities between our countries in years. The fact that they recognize the sovereignity of those upstart elves who claim a third of our country is certainly worrisome, but so long as they are harrying Thrane in the south and having to deal with their country being overrun by monsters, they aren’t a threat.

Aundair: Our long-time allies have been quiet since Queen Aurala took the throne. She has been suing for peace and quietly building up her defenses. As far as we know, they are still allies, but allies who never offer any support aren’t really worth much.

Valenar: Still part of Cyre. Once we sort out this Galifar business, we’ll have to explain to those elves whose land they are living on.

Darguun: Might end up pretty good neighbors to the south, so long as they serve us well as allies in this war.

Zilargo: Basically an entire country of spies for Breland. Gnomes can’t be trusted.

Talenta Plains: They’ve kept out of the fighting and only bothered Karrnath. Fine with us.

Q’barra: The refuge of cowards who refuse to fight for true Galifar.

Mror Holds: They are the ones winning this war. Everyone is so in debt to the Mror clans, they may end up the true rulers of Khorvaire.

Eldeen Reaches: Dangerous radicals—while Aundair may not have protected them the way they should have, they still have a duty to their liege and their betrayal should not be taken lightly.

Lhazaar Principalities: A bunch of Pirates led by a scoundrel with a ridiculously inflated sense of self-importance. Claiming to be a Wynarn scion, indeed![/sblock]

Also, see update to the time-line. I should finish the time-line tonight.
