Reduced hit points?

Hi, all.

I like 4e, for the most part. My biggest turn off, however, is the absurd length of combat (YMMV, of course). I'm trying to figure out a way to speed it up without monkeying around with too much, and the only thing I can think of is to reduce monster hit points, by around half.

It seems to me that in order to keep things interesting and dangerous, I would also have to reduce PC hit points. But by how much? Do they start with half of what they normall would and then only receive a much reduced amount? That seems almost punitive and perhaps dangerous considering some of the monster powers. 3/4?

Have any of you experimented with this at all?

Thanks!

It might be better for you to reduce the surges per day or surge recovery values by half instead of changing HP values. That would mean a given PC could still survive a barrage of monster attacks, but spend a similar amount of surges to recover from a fight.
