Regeneration + Lycanthropy question

With characters and monsters that regenerate, all damage except for fire and acid is actually treated as subdual. So, if they receive more damage than their HP, it's actually subdual, so they are "killed", but come back. But what happens when they are "dead"? Are they actually dead, and then come back to life....so they appear dead? Then when the subdual drops below their hp, they start breathing again, and come back to life? Or are they obviously still alive?

The point behind the question is this. In my game on Friday, one of the characters, who has regeneration, was massacred by a dire wereboar hill giant. The other characters pulled back to heal, leaving this character the only one nearby. The wereboar beat the character's initiative, took a 5' step, and hit with all four attacks, causing 142 hp of subdual damage to the character who had a max of 91. One of those attacks was a bite. Now, the character rolled and passed the Fort save vs. catching lycanthropy....but given she was "dead", I'm not sure if she should have gotten a save in the first place. So, is she now infected?

Well, either the character was no longer alive and wasn't subject to infection (and thus didn't catch lycanthropy), or the character succeeded the fort save and didn't catch lycanthropy. Either way, not infected.

I'd probably play it via a "looks dead, but isn't" so that the character can survive if the regen isn't a known thing. Of course, the acid in the Dire Wearboar Hillgiant's stomach dose normal damage, so it's a really bad idea to leave the "body" behind ....

Absolutely.....in this case, several membres of the party went berserk at losing a trusted friend, and charged it. It was almost a TPK, until the druid started spending one round after another summoning animal companions, and they swarmed the direboar. The animals weren't able to do much, but they were a distraction, until the monk was able to grab the silver tipped longspear that had been held by the character who was slain, and use it to start inflicting lethal damage.

Being swallowed definitely would not have been a good idea :)
