Reincarnate and ECL

The Iron Mark

First Post
If you reincarnate from a character with LA and racial HD (say, an Illithid), into a one without LA or racial HD, do you lose said LA or HD? If so, then I think I found a way to get a bunch of nifty stuff from Illithid Savant and then not be hunted everywhere...

I'm afraid, as a creature reincarnated into another Aberration, you would still be hunted... :)

For a humanoid creature, the new incarnation is determined using the following table. For nonhumanoid creatures, a similar table of creatures of the same type should be created.

The spell doesn't really take LA and racial HD into consideration.
If I were to DM this, I would rule that you lose 1 ECL, not level. Hence, you can only reincarnate into forms that will allow you to have lower or equal class levels at ECL-1. (LA should be modified to account for no mental ability modifiers, however.)

That's why I'm asking, and thanks for the input. Anyone else got any ideas? This is one of those topics that more than one opinion is really needed.

I'd say that by the book, yes. When you see what new race you've become, you take that race as-is, and then apply your character levels onto it. 'nuff said. You may or may not lose some power if the new race is lacking in natural hit dice (or the special powers that would require an LA), but that's how the spell works.

I don't have my book handy, but IIRC, one of the requirements for that PrC is that you be an illithid. If you don't meet the prereqs, then a DM would certainly have leeway for saying you can't advance in that PrC any further, nor use its existing powers.

You wouldn't have access to the Illithid Savant abilities - the character would no longer be an illithid, and thus no longer meet the pre-requisites for the class.

You would lose the ECL from the original race - you're no longer getting the benefits that warrant the ECL, but you would have the ECL of whatever you came back as. The racial hit dice are a bit more sticky a wicket, however.

Andargor has a good point about the aberration type.

You lose the racial abilities of your old race, and gain the abilities of the new. Level adjustment and racial hit dice are both racial abilities and would go away.

But then, where do your XP go, that went into all those levels that you didn't get due to LA? I believe you would keep the same XP total, and have a hard conversation with your GM about what extra levels you could take to use those XP, without gaining any major new class abilities. Paragon levels in the new race, levels in the classes that you already have, or NPC class levels might be appropriate.

edit: It's easier if you reincarnate into a race with a higher Level Adjustment. You just have extra abilities to use over the long, long stretch before you gain enough XP to reach the next level as modified by Level Adjustment.
