Reincarnation Question

I give the player the +LA at the time of the reincarnation... but I adjust the XP required for the next level at that time as well (Racial HD will do this as well). So the character will reap the benefits of his new more powerful body, but will take a bit longer to reach his next class level.

Because the sub-par races are not written as negative LA races, they wont get adjusted. If the player got a truly 'crappy' race for his profession or for the setting in general, then I might arbitrarily grant some boon, but it would vary with the situation.

What a wonky spell anyway.

The Dalai Lama had to wait a few years before strutting onto stage again. Guess those monks aren't quite up to speed. They've got some cheap, illegitmate Chinese copy of reincarnate.

Ah well.

Yeah, you get to keep your cool feat.

So, what about the weak races? Do you punish the player for rolling a goblin or kobold?

The spirit of the dead character can always refuse to come back as a goblin, causing the spell to fail.

Them's the breaks. If there were -LA races I'd leave them in.
It's all part of the wonder that is magic. Some you win, some you lose.
Provided the players know the risks before they decide I don't see the problem.
While I rule it the same way as you, your comments are conflicting. I don't see why "Them's the breaks" can't just apply to the +LA adjustment races. The reason I don't apply the LA is because (a) it's low enough that IMO it doesn't matter, (b) I hate the LA rules, particularly on some of the races on that table, (c) any method of handling a sudden LA just feels like crap. But, if I said "Too bad so sad" when they roll up a goblin, I would have no problem saying the same thing if they got screwed with a sudden LA.

Unfortunately for the dead character, he won't know what body it is until the spell succeeds. The spell does not work if the soul is not willing. This would mean that there's no roll, no nothing. It simply does not work. If the soul is willing, however, you get a roll but then it is too late to say no.

Absolutely. Otherwise the spirit would keep refusing until it "saw" a new potential body that it liked, which means given enough access to Reincarnation spells, a player could effectively CHOOSE his or her favorite race on the list. Clearly not the intent.
