Types are a bit of a mess mixing stat mechanics with descriptions. In 3.5 ropers are magical beasts. "Magical beasts are similar to animals but can have Intelligence scores higher than 2. Magical beasts usually have supernatural or extraordinary abilities, but sometimes are merely bizarre in appearance or habits." Why not aberrations? "An aberration has a bizarre anatomy, strange abilities, an alien mindset, or any combination of the three." Magical beasts have 1/1 BAB while aberrations have 3/4. Pathfinder at least made the monocular tentacle pillar monster an aberration.
Why are hyena faced gnolls humanoids and not monstrous humanoids ("Monstrous humanoids are similar to humanoids, but with monstrous or animalistic features") in 3e and Pathfinder? 3/4 versus 1/1 on their BAB and so they can be affected by "person" spells.
Planetouched should definitely be humanoid (base race) with augmented native outsider subtype IMO. A touch of outsider blood that expresses after a couple generations of no traits should not change whether you can be affected by charm person spells.
