Yep, it's twice the base damage (i.e. 2x 1d6) + 1.5x Str damage, IIRC.

This is reasonable and it's how I usually do things. If you want to get technical though there is nothing in the RAW supporting this. I acknowledge that this seems to be the correct formula for determining the damage on a rend, but there is nothing in the rend ability description that says it is Strength-based or anything like that. So this is purely a matter of interpretation. You could probably justify it either way if you like.

The ability is not defined as twice the base damage, but that is usually the case because it usually occurs after 2+ successful claw attacks. When I say "usually" I really mean in all cases I have seen. So, Thanee is spot on. :)

Here's the definition to support the x 1.5 Str bonus, however:
WotC On-line Glossary said:
rend
If a creature with this special attack (extraordinary) hits with the specified natural attack, it latches onto the opponent's body and tears the flesh. A rend attack deals damage equal to the creature's natural attack + 1-1/2 times its Str modifier. The creature's descriptive text gives the exact amount.
