Renegade has announced plans to develop an RPG based off the popular book series Dungeon Crawler Carl. Renegade announced plans to release a wide-ranging line of tabletop games based on the popular book series, which features a former Coast Guard veteran and his ex-girlfriend's cat forced to compete in a dungeon crawl competition created by hostile aliens. The first of these projects is a "full scale" roleplaying game that will allow players to immerse themselves in the world of the games. No designers were named for the project and it's unclear whether the game will use a bespoke system or one of the systems previously designed by Renegade for other publishers.

Renegade has built up an RPG line built primarily on licensed IPs. The publisher works with White Wolf on various World of Darkness books and also develops RPGs based on Power Rangers, GI Joe, Transformers, My Little Pony, and Welcome to Night Vale.

As Athelu states... the hero is existing to break the system, rather than be broken bu the system. I don't see this as a game I'm interested in playing. Would it require an adversarial DM? Open world play w/ railroad story/plots... requiring PC's to constantly attempt to brake the game.
Good reads but I'll play something else.
To me, the relationship between the GM and the players seems like it would be along the lines of Monty Python's Cocurricular Historical Reenactment Programme, where the GM plays the role of the villain, who curates entertaining challenges for the heroes to overcome

Hmmm. You may have a point it may turn out a bit like Assassins Creed the movie. I always thought that was a bad idea because the story is the meta part not the game play. The important parts of DC Carl is him trying to fight the system not the levels themselves (at least through book 6).

It can be done but I think it will be a challenge. It will be interesting to watch the developments.

This is an area where I'd love to hear people who've read this series talk about: what's special about this that it shouldn't just be a sourcebook for another game?
They are by far my favorite books of all time. Mind you I have 337 scifi/fantasy audible books with 1 year 4 months listening time on audible.I feel they engage all emotions needed fora quality scifi/fantasy book with litrpg loot satisfaction. Massive humor, horror/gore, wonder sadness, connection and massive character and story development. Truly my favorite of all time by a bit.

Do you mind if I ask what the appropriate age group is? I suspect my daughter (9) is a bit too young for them, but she loves several Minecraft series, and so I get them recommended to me. Don't want to give her nightmares!

Nooooooo. Noo. No. Not for 9-year-olds. We're talking about explosions of gore, very adult sexual themes/depictions/references/humor (though very little in the way of overt sexual content), horrific deaths, and black humor as far as the eye can see... I'd say teen at least.

Goddamnit, Donut!
Winner!

I think the speculation about the rules depends. Is the RPG emulating or for playing the GAME in the fictional world or for playing in the fictional world itself?

I do think the latter will have to include playing the in fiction game too, but the actual RPG rules themselves could be very different if the intent is to play characters in the fictional world.

What you're saying makes perfect sense. We can't know if it's simply a 5E mod, powered by Mythras, Agon, or anything else. Mostly, it's announcement makes me daydream about how I'd adapt it

Renegade's Essence20 (E20) system is their current rules backbone allowing crossplay between the GIJoe, Transformers, and Power Rangers settings. E20 is d20/5E derived with escalating dice tossed alongside the d20 instead of using modifiers. It would not suprise me to see this license use E20 rules as well. I believe WotC alum Elisa Teague (Tasha's Caudron of Everything, BaHotH: Widows Walk) is still design lead over at Renegade.
