Replacement for Favored Enemy

Beowulf

First Post
I was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas of what a replacement for the favored enemy ability of a ranger would be.

My new character (maybe) is going to be an archer ranger, but not really the type to pick a certain people the specialize in killing them.

He's more of the scout/woodland guide, but still is very skilled in combat due to "unsafe" woods.

So, any ideas, thoughts, comments, concerns, questions, rants, ect?

Some of the variant rangers that I've seen have replaced "Favored Enemy" with "Favored Terrain". This is based on the Wheel of Time Woodsman's "Nature's Warrior" ability. The ranger chooses a certain type of terrain, such as forest, plains, mountains, swamp, etc, and they receive a bonus to certain rolls when located on that type of terrain. What the bonus is and which rolls it applies to varies with each variant, though.

Your character would probably want to choose forest as their first favored terrain.

Why are the woods unsafe? Answer this question and you have your favored enemies. Ask your DM.

If there are no particular humanoids native to the woods, then take animals and beasts first. This makes you a skilled woodsman, indeed. Note that animals includes the dire versions, too. They are not exactly rare so this choice will serve you well.
