The Story of Vanis

So Vanis the Rogue was walking along, when he didn't spot some children coming towards him. The children, mistaking him for Orlando Bloom, hug him. Little did Vanis know, they had chicken pox. Vanis died later that afternoon.

I agree. There are some sick classes or multi-class combinations that really only become viable with high stats. Paladins and clerics become much more potent with higher stats. A paladin and cleric really need 4 or 5 good stats to be an awesome fighter.

That's pretty ridiculous.

Comparing that to someone who rolls low and has much fewer really good options and it's a party balance issue.

All said, I agree with Altalazar (which I will probably never live down). If everyone rolls until they get "average" then you have simply done a really time-consuming point buy.

Rolling + keeping what you get = unbalanced party

If that's not a problem then play and enjoy. Depending on the type of game I might just take those stats and decide to try and break the game as much as I could!!

Oh for crying out loud. You're not going to "break the game." If characters are too powerful, the DM is going ot compensate by throwing stronger opponents at them. Heck, in one of my games we use d10+10 for all stats, and we still get the crap kicked out of us on a weekly basis.

I personally like this. but sometimes with 4d6 instead of 3d6. I like a character to have a feel that he was not genetically engineered to have the best possible combination of physical and mental attributes for his chosen profession.

EX. The last character I made:

Human Sorcerer

STR 13
DEX 13
CON 18
INT 10
WIS 8
CHA 13

He's not that bright, and not too good at what he does, but he CAN take a beating. :)

I'm actually enjoying playing this character more than one who has all high and ideally assigned stats. This way it feels like I accomplished something when the character functions well within the game, instead of EXPECTING him to come out victorious every single combat. :p Plus the 8 in wisdom + no schooling lends itself towards playing a dull-minded ex-coal miner who is simply flabergasted at the idea that he can hyuck Magic Missiles at things. :lol:
 

I'm glad that I switched to Point Buy.
One of my players always rolls high. Always. I'm talking 58 point buy stats here. I don't know how he does it, but he doesn't cheat...

One of my other players rolls something like 15 - 20 point buy characters... consistently. He still plays them effectively (more so than the 58 point buy character...), but the disparity between stats just leads to more problems than its worth.

32 point buy I find is a nice middle ground. You can be really good at what you do, but you'll probably be bad at everything else. Or you can spread the wealth around.

I like point buy.

Int - 3d6: 2,1,1, -> 4

My bottom line is a DM has no business telling me how to create my character. Well, s/he does if i am willing to let them tell me. But I don't. If a DM insists I play a character I think is crap, just because s/he thinks my roleplaying experience will be so much better because of it, I'm leaving. I have been playing/DMing for 18+ years. I know what I like and don't like. If a Dm wants to sit there and tell me to play a character I don't like, I have better ways to waste my time, elsehwere.

i'm there to have fun my way. I am willing to let the DM do whatever they want with their world/NPC's/etc... but I darn well better be allowed to play a character I like. Even if that means i have to re-roll 50 times to get it. I never do point buy. As soon as a DM tells me they do it that way I tell them I am out of there, and they can think I am a munchkin powergamer all they want. I do not care, their opinion means nothing to my life anyway.

I have said enough.
