Researching Invocations?

My first question is, can invocations be researched or is there any flavor in the warlock class that would prohibit this?

If not, would it be reasonable to come up with a way to research them (researching wouldn't really be the right word, but since bards and sorcerers can "research" spells, I'm just using the same word).

I guess if the second part of the thread is what occurs, then this would belong more in house rules, so if that happens, someone please move it.

No, I don't think it's in flavour to be able to research Invocations. They are supernatural abilities that were granted with a pact with infernal or fey powers, manifestations of abilities that were imprinted on the soul, sorta like Sorcerors, only more supernatural and innate.

That being said, I don't think that it's unreasonable to come up with more Invocations with co-operation with your DM. Just use the existing Invocations as a guideline: there are enough to give a good idea of the general power level of the various tiers of Invocations. Be careful though: a Warlock can use any of these abilities at will, and you need to keep that in mind when trying to keep them relatively balanced.

Bards and Sorcerers cannot research spells. Wizards can research spells (3.5 Players Handbook, p. 179).

Warlocks need to use the 'Extra Invocation' feat to add invocations to their repertoires, just as Bards and Sorcerers need to use the 'Extra Spell' feat.
