ressurrection and level/ability loss

A character looses a level due to being ressurrected, but what happens if a character looses a level and lands on e.g. mid 3rd-level and then rises to level four again?
Will the character still gain a point added to an ability (as normal when achieving level 4, 8, etc.), or is this a one-time thing?

Depends, did you make them take away that point for dropping below 4th level?

I personally say it's a one time only thing even though I don't think there are any rules to really support that but it just seems too abusable if it wasn't a one time thing.

I was thinking that they have to gain ½-a-level all over... but then again... it's unfair for the game if they get killed on level 4 and gain an advantage, but if they die on level 5, it's just too bad...
Did I just answer my own question ? :)

If a death drops you to 3rd level, you're supposed to lose the ability point you originally gained at 4th. When you advance again, you get the point back.

Some DMs don't take the ability point away upon death, just to make all the math simpler. If that's how you play, the character should not get a bonus point when he regains 4th level.

The PC should certainly lose the ability point if he/she drops to 3rd. We have instituted a leveling sheet for each character that tracks feats, skill points, BAB, HP, ability increases, new spells, et cetera - anything that a character gains from leveling up. This has greatly simplified the (mostly rare) instances when levels are truly lost.

I simplify it even more. Too much paperwork, so I simply give a 500 xp/level penalty that must be made up before they can accumulate xp normally again. So far it's worked fine. It stunts their growth like the official rules, but doesn't require as much paperwork and number-crunching.
