I'm of the opposite view from most, it seems. For feel, rather than mechanical reasons, I think the multiclass restriction should apply to Druids as well.

From a game mechanical perspective it just seems insane to allow people to multiclass into Paladin and Monk; if it were allowed, every arcane caster would take one level of monk and every fighter or ranger would take a single level of Paladin.

Considering that most of my 3e experience has been in Living Greyhawk, where we follow the cores rules (except where we don't ;) ), I'm really disappointed with this decision. That sort of decision should be up to DMs and be dependent on background and the campaign world.

(and I've got to agree about the half-elf and half-orc bit - who the heck are they talking to?)

Everyone can already multiclass into Paladin or Monk, they just can't gain any more levels in Paladin of Monk after gaining a level in another class. And for anyone who wanted to take one level of those classes, they could already do it in 3.0e rules as it stands. What stops people from doing that is mostly the 20% xp reduction if they're not using their favoured classes.

Therefore your last statement is incorrect because it can already happen.

Uh, but that's already allowed, as well it should be. If a fighter (or some other class) has a change of heart and wants to become a holy warrior, then he should be allowed to do so. The restriction is that if you take levels of another class you can't continue to advance as a monk or paladin.

This bodes ill for removing the 1E/2E-style druid weapon restrictions.

Of course this ruling does nothing to change that, since currently you may a Monk or Paladin level at will. You just can't go back after you leave the class.

edit: damn! crossposted again! ;)

FYI

Monk and Paladin multiclassing is allowed in FR, as noted in the class section of the FRCS. Ergo, this seems to be very much a campaign flavor decison, and obviously can be ditched without breaking anything.

Granted, it might be simpler to allow it in the core rules and then make the restriction a flavor decision, instead of the other way around.

Anyway, even if this is an unpopular decision, it's pretty inconsequential. The things that matter seem to be what's improving in 3.5e.

Thanks everyone for pointing out my misreading of the rules. I think I'll stick with my misinterpretation in my campaign world though as I really hate the idea of somebody taking a single level of a class and getting abilities like the wisdom bonus to AC or detect evil at will.

Yeah, I hate that rule. We have better than a 2 to 1 vote in favor of ditching the Paladin & Monk restrictions. Just who is Wizards of the Coast talking to? Doesn't give me much faith in their play test surveys.
