Retributive Amulet?

Retributive Amulet, BoED pg 116

I don't know if this has been asked before, but does the wearer of this item take full or half damage from melee attacks?

The way I read it is that they would take full and the attacker would take half, but as an astute player pointed out it says reflected (or transferred, something like that don't have the book in front of me) so he assumed that he takes half and the opponent takes half as well.

Anything new on this item out there that I am just missing? Thanks for the help.

When the wearer takes damage from a melee weapon attack made with a natural or hand-held weapon, the damage is divided equally between the attacker and the target... if the damage is an odd number, the extra point goes to the attacker.

The Retributive Amulet is hands-down the most broken item I've seen WotC print.

I don't think any DM I've ever known would allow it as-is.

rtfm ftw.

That's sick. Who allows this item in their campaign? Do you allow it unmodified or what?
Do I allow it? Well, WRT the "exalted" stuff... it's an all or nothing with me (houserule). If a character wants to live by most, if not everything in chapter 1 of that book, then the character options within that book are available. No cherry picking.

And the Retributive Amulet is worth 56,000gp... based on DMG guidelines, you'd need to be over 15th character level before you could have a single item worth that much.

So, is it overpowered with all of the above... not for me. YMMV.
