Return of the King surpasses a billion dollars worldwide box office

Do the Titanic numbers include DVD or Video sales as well?
Nope, those are just the theatrical box office returns. ROTK would need to make one hell of a 4th quarter run to match Titanic. I just don't see it happening.

*sigh*

Titanic is the most overrated piece of drek ever. It must be overthrown.

Well, I'm off to drain my bank account buying seats for ROTK (kidding).

Step away from your computer and head to your local theater still showing ROTK right now.

I wanna beat Titanic in the box office and then beat them again in the DVD/video sales. And let us see who is king of the friggin' cinema world. DiCaprio got nothing on Mortensen, yo! That iceberg got nothing on Mount Doom! That ship got nothing on Minas Tirith! Winslet got nothing on Otto!

:p

RotK needs to nearly DOUBLE it's box office -- Titanic's at $1.8 billion. RotK needs another $830 million to catch up. I'm not holding my breath.

Titanic had a lot of things going for it -- mass appeal across virtually all demographics, ELEVEN Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director, and a whole lot of sailing room -- after Titanic came out there was MONTHS of time without any real competition and Cameron's big ol' boat just kept on raking in the cash. RotK will get a boost with a Best Picture/Best Director win, but another $830 milllion? That's a long way to Tipperary, folks.

I agree that it probably will not beat Titanic, but it reached 1 BILLION dollars one week ahead of Titanic, so it is possible.

A friggin Billion dollars, that is 10 times what it cost to make and advertise.

At 2.8 billion dollars worldwide and counting, no work of cinema has ever come close to LOTR. Remember, this was one single production. I think we know who the "King" of the cinema world is, and it isn't Cameron.

LotR was released as three separate movies. One standard ticket did not get you into all three movies.

2.8 billion for the trilogy averages to just under $900 million per picture. Like it or not, Titanic is still the winner.

Once Titanic II and Titanic III are released, this will be a valid comparison.

LOTR. 300 million dollars. Three movies. ONE production. 2.8 billion dollar return.

Titanic. 200 million dollars. One movie. ONE production. 1.8 billion dollar return.

Production for production, LOTR kicked Titanic's ass.
