First one question:
It had a $137m budget? It didn't really look like it had that big of a budget. What was
it spent on? The actors weren't exactly in the higher range of the pay spectrum and
the Hulk, while impressive, can't have been THAT expensive.
I'm often amazed by how a movie's budget often seems to have nothing to do with
how visually impressive it looks. The Hulk, is not visually impressive at all. But it didn't
need to, which is fine by me.
.
That said, I saw the film and my worries were put to rest. Captured the spirit of the
[Peter David's] Hulk perfectly. I still wished they'd gone with Banner making a weapon
of some kind instead of that 'healing factor' thing, which always was a big psychological
screw-up in Banner's mess-of-a-mind, him feeling guilty for creating weapons an' all,
seeing first hand the pain his arrogance caused etc.
But very good movie, character-motivated like all the best Hulk stories. I never even
hoped that Ang Lee would get what Hulk was really all about (since he'd never heard
of the character before offered the director's chair) so I was always just expected
some good Hulk-Smash! GreenGiant/tanks action at best.
Thank you Ang Lee, a lesser director would've screwed that up.
.
That said, the non-Hulk-comic-book-fans I've talked to are nearly all disappointed with
the movie, since they too, hoped for some good tank-crushing, but feel cheated since
they did not get all that much of it. Some have said that they might like it better if they
see it again in their cinema-nerd-drama-snob mode and leave their genre-geek hats
at home. The reviews here are also very divided. Giving it bad reviews as a weak action
summer flick or fantastic reviews as a drama.
This is what we call sloppy marketing.
.
Overall, as a Marvel movie, I put it below the greatness of X-Men 2, on par with X-Men 1
and above Spider-Man, Blade 1 & 2 and Daredevil.
Viking Bastard's MARVEL Movie Top List
1. X-Men 2
2. The Hulk/X-Men
3. Blade 2/Spider-Man
4. Blade 1
5. Daredevil
It might move down on the scale on repeative viewings, like Spider-Man, which I loved on
first viewing, but really gets kinda dull on second and third view (in fact, I had a hard time
sitting through it the third time).
