[Review] Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game

Trolls, Blood Elves and likely other races will be included in the Alliance and Horde sourcebook that's schedualed to come next. So I personally will wait until that one's out before I buy the main Warcraft book.

Although the tech rules seem intriguing.

I saw a post on the rpg.net forums about the Alliance and Horde Compendium (or maybe it was even on this forum), and it mentioned blood elves, trolls, and pandarens as races that will appear.

I also remember the Necromancer, Demon Hunter, and Death Knight mentioned as new PrCs.

Haven't got the book yet but one of my friends (reviews sometimes as T_Wright) has a complain that this book reeks of Palladiumness. "See Book Y. See Book X. See Book Z." Said that not having the mounts for the one PrC was really just stupid.

Don't know if that's true or not as I haven't looked over the book but that was his main beef.

Hey Joe, I must respectfully disagree with saying it suffers from "Palladiumness."
At least with regards to the Mounted Warrior's mount stats.
The entry in the book merely states: This mount may be a heavy warhorse..,a nightsaber panther...,or a dire wolf...-The GM will provide information about the mount...

I am looking at the book and should state a disclaimer that I have not read the book all the way from cover to cover yet, nor am I exceptionally knowledgeable of the Warcraft 'universe.'

I don't see anything under this particular subject that says "Refer to book x" or "stats can be found in book y," etc.

One thing I like about the d20 system, something I am beginning to appreciate more as I continually but superfluous books is that it is easy to make things up as a DM as you want them to be, and a resource such as Enworld helps those of us that wish to seek to attain the karmic cycle of gaming "balance". i.e. it's easy to make it up and not have to buy a book for it.

That said the stats for heavy warhorse and dire wolf already exist in the MM, and as to a nightsaber panther, yes they will likely appear stated out in the "Manual of Monsters." But if I didn't want to wait for that or didn't want to have to buy another book it is left open IMO to just using the stats of a Lion from the MM. Seems to be a balanced match compared to the other 2 options.
Now it is nice that in the PHBv3.5 they provide "sample paladin's mounts" Heavy Warhorse. But that entry itself refers to the reader to "page 85 of the DMG for information on how to read a creature's statistics block."
The Warcraft campaign setting does state it requires the use of the D&D PHB 3.5, a book that-in turn requires the other 2 core books by not including the stats for every type of creature which may be summoned using the various summoning spells, etc.

Now I have seen mention that (on page 156 chapter 4) The necromancer is a prestige class that will be fully detailed in the forthcoming supplement Alliance & Horde Compendium But anybody could skip that if they didn't want to shell out the cash for it. ;)

Now as I said I have not read the Entire book and could easily be missing such a things as was mentioned, but at least as far as MHO I have not had any feelings of Paladiumness.
I am very impressed with this book in fact.

Well that's my .02 on the subject so far.
Hope it helps!
Cheers! ;)

First off, Goblin Shredders are definately piloted by Goblins.

Allegiance being limited to the Alliance, to the Horde, or "Independent" strikes me as a bit odd, since the Sentinal Army, the Scourge, and the Burning Legion are conspiciously absent in that list.

P85 sounds like a Priestess of the Moon minus her armor.

Nice to see that this is actually out.. Does it pretty much just focus on Kalimdor?

Though I guess low level parties shouldn't be travelling in Lordaeron.

The Sentiels (Night Elves) are members of the Alliance.

The Scourge and Burning Legion are also detailed in the book as factions, but the book is clearly geared towards Alliance & Horde parties. The Scourge and the Burning Legion are treated as evil factions that the players can fight against.

Yes, the geography section of the book focuses on Kalimdor pretty much exclusively. But don't worry, Kalimdor is a big place with enough interesting locations that it can keep an adventuring party busy for a good, long time.

Loraeron and Azeroth are mentioned as well, but not in great detail. Those lands will receive their share of attention when the Atlas of Azeroth suppilment comes out next year.

The horde allied with the night elves and the alliance as well in W3 classic. Before that, the alliance consisted of high elves, humans and dwarves, while the night elves were a faction of their own.

The scourge and the burning legion are probably not added as they are not very suitable for a campaign. Its the easiest thing in the world to fix the factions, though; its just to move around a couple of races ^^

The Horde and the Alliance are no longer allied with each other.

There exists a nonaggression pact between the Horde and the Alliance, so they are technically at peace with each other. However, skirmishes between the two factions are common.
